I don’t think so much about design, or patterns, or aesthetics, until I have found the medicine the item should carry. The teaching it can pass on to the wearer. As I embrace this traditional form of Metis cultural expression, I have resisted selling my work, preferring to maintain my beading practice as a way to gift others.

Both earrings that I have created specifically for this fundraiser carry the element of fire in the red, and the smoke that fire makes, in the black.
Fire reminds me of gathering with my family. Sitting around the fire, telling stories, and singing songs. Children off in the darkness gathering fireflies, and the adults laughing in the glow of that fire. Fire for me takes me back to the awe, and power, of the flame, the joy of gathering, the safety in family, and nights under the stars filled with awe.

For the one who wears this, I wish they too can connect to their own inner fire, that lights their path, that gathers people in community and friendship, and that inspires awe as they walk."

Joseph Plaskett was born in 1918 in New Westminster. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2001 for his excellence in the field of visual art. His autobiography A Speaking Likeness (Ronsdale Press) was published in 1999. The Plaskett Gallery, at New Westminster’s Massey Theatre, is named in his honour.
