Best of BC
Blue Mountain sparklers can be many things, but their best attribute may be their ability to be consistently good year in and year out. The Reserve Brut 2014 R.D. is estate grown, hand harvested, and all first press juice kept separate by variety. After the first fermentation, the wines were blended, yeasted, and bottled in the spring of 2015. After that, the wine sits sur lie for 7½ years. It was disgorged in August 2022 and finished dry. It then gets another year to unwind in the bottle before being released. The nose is an enticing autolytic affair of nutty oatmeal and strawberry. There is a refreshing citrus undercurrent and a full flavoured long finish that is almost elegant. It's a wine for BC gastronomy, for sure. It is fully ready to drink. -Anthony Gismondi
Phantom Creek Estates Becker Vineyard Cuvee No. 27 2019
Becker Vineyard was initially developed in 1977, as part of the pioneering Becker Project, which demonstrated that vitis vinifera could thrive in BC However, the property’s potential for late ripening red varieties was first identified in 1993, and was replanted to Cabernet family varieties that year. Tucked up against the Okanagan Highland mountains, Becker Vineyard produces finessed, elegant wines from the upper terrace of the Black Sage Bench.
The nose of this wine exhibits ripe baked fruit notes of dark cherry and black currant combined with subtle savoury notes of black sage and forest floor. This Cabernet Franc dominant Bordeaux blend has a complex and balanced palate offering layers of ripe red bramble fruit with herbaceous and peppery undertones.
Le Vieux Pin Syrah Equinox 2020 is comprised of fruit grown in multiple plots throughout the South Okanagan Valley. A traditionally made Syrah in the sense that the sum is considered greater than its parts. The resulting effort is a very complex wine with dark garnet color that perfectly and effortlessly combines elements of both the old-world and the new-world styles.
This monumental wine is at the same time feminine and masculine. It has grace and power, spice and florals, gamy and savory notes. Yin and yang come together to showcase a perfectly balanced Syrah. White peppercorn pokes its head out in an otherwise mostly black peppercorn and floral-dominated profile. With time in the glass, more wild floral notes come to the foreground.
Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin 2019
Osoyoos Larose is owned by Bordeaux's Groupe Taillan, and this, Le Grand Vin, feels firmly French influenced, while having grown up very Okanagan. The 2019 blends 58% merlot, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 7% petit verdot. Smouldering cassis, black plum, and blackberry are the background for this savoury red, built around smartly toasted oak, and firm, long tannins. Crushed leaves, cracked peppercorn, smoked cured beef, and espresso complete the picture, with well placed acidity carrying this long on the palate. Drinking well now with a decant and a roast beef, but this vintage will reward with cellaring over the short term.

Off the Beaten Track
Not for the faint of heart, these wines are truly for the adventurous wine drinker.
Alain Graillot Syrocco 2021, Morocco.
The brainchild of Crozes Hermitage (Northern Rhone, France) superstar Alain Graillot, this wine is produced at the modern winery of Thalvin, not far from Casablanca, Morocco. The idea for Syrocco was born while Alain Graillot was vacationing in Morocco. Alain realized how the terroir of this region mirrored his vineyards in the Northern Rhone. A collaboration was born between Alain and the modern winery of Domaine Ouled Thaleb and the result was Syrocco.
Made from selected parcels of organic, old-vine Syrah, the 2019 Syrocco is black-ruby in colour with a compelling nose featuring complex aromatics, and excellent balance. Lots of ripe purple-black fruits and dried red cherry swathed in hints of sandalwood, herbs, and spices here. The long finish is dry, and reminiscent of classic Mediterranean Syrah.
Troupis Winery Fteri Agiorgitiko 2022, Pelleponese, Greece.
The Troupis family has a long history of work in agronomy in the Peloponnese dating back to the ‘70s. Today, Troupis Winery is located in the heart of Mantinia at an altitude of 700 meters in the region of Fteri or “fern.” It is a familial, modern enterprise, totaling roughly 70 acres.
“Fteri Agiorgitiko” is the result of both the selected grape Agiorgitiko, grown in the hills which surround the plain of Nemea and a few days of maceration at relatively low temperatures, it has the characteristic dark red – purple colour and fragrances of gooseberry and pomegranate.
A supple and spicy flavour with velvety tannins yet leaving pleasant hints of spices and butter caramel.
Domaine des Tourelles Red, Bekaa Valley Lebanon.
Syrah (40%), Cabernet-Sauvignon (40%), Cinsault (15%),Carignan (5%) are vinted separately and fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks for 10 days. Malo-lactic fermentation begins spontaneously. The wine is blended then aged in concrete vats.
A wine with minimal intervention, a true expression of the Bekaa Valley, the juxtaposition of ripe dark fruit against a vibrant juicy core reflects the hot, dry days and cool nights of the valley. This wine will appeal to fans of Southern Rhône reds.
Anapea Margo 2020, Kakheti, Georgia. Georgian winemaking practices existed 3,000 years before the invention of writing and 5,000 years before the start of the Iron Age.
ANAPEA produces wine with traditional kvevri technology from seven Georgian grape varieties (Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Kakhuri Mtsvane (Kakhetian Green), Khikhvi, Rkatsiteli Vardisperi (Pink Rkatsiteli) and Kakhetian Mtsvivana) in Sagarejo and Kvareli. The vineyards are maintained and wine produced only with a traditional, eco-approach; harvest is vinted and aged in kvevri (egg-shaped earthenware amphorae). They are restoring the forgotten past of winemaking traditions of the first winemakers.
This wine is An experimental cuvée from Khatia Saperavi rosé juice fermented on spent Mtsvane skins.
Early-harvested Mtsvane is crushed and begins fermentation on the skins. Fully ripe Saperavi is harvested several weeks later. The juice of the Mtsvane is removed from the kvevri, leaving behind the must. The Saperavi grapes are directly pressed and this rosé-Saperavi juice is poured into the kvevri over the Mtsvane must. This spontaneous fermentation/maceration lasts for 6-7 days prior to the removal of the Mtsvane skins and the wine is allowed to finish it’s fermentation. It is then transferred to a cooler set of Qkvevri for a 6-month rest. Bottled unfined, unfiltered with minimal SO2 at bottling.

Magnum of Champagne
"The Pierre Péters estate, situated in the heart of the ""Côte des Blancs"" in the village of Le Mesnil sur Oger, has been a family house for six generations and has produced Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Champagnes since 1919. They do everything possible to express the chalky soil of their great terroirs as passionate craftsmen.
Champagne grower-producer, the wines come exclusively from their own vineyards. The house currently operates just over 19 hectares of Chardonnay, mainly located in the communes of Le Mesnil sur Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant.
The family has been able to maintain and age vineyards which are now 30-years old on average. Each year in respect of the environment, they adapt their cultivation methods to obtain healthy grapes so that their Champagne expresses more precisely the richness, subtlety and the elegance of the great ""terroirs"" of the Côte des Blancs.
The Cuvee de Reserve is a sharp selection of 4 top parcels of Peters most beautiful crus of the Cote des Blancs (Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant, Oger), blended with about 20% of the best of their Perpetual Reserve. This Cuvee is aged at least 36 months on the lees before disgorgement.
The wine is like crystal, the robe is golden with hints of green typical to the Chardonnay. The mousse is fine and regular with a pretty ribbon of strong bubbles.
The first nose is flowery (hawthorn and honeysuckle) and evolves in the glass with hints of fresh bread and roasted almond. The finish offers an incredible bunch of sea sprays and oyster shell flavors.
The attack is very pure, tight but creamy at the same time. An initial feeling of delicacy is dominated by white flowers and hazelnuts, then comes notes of fine citrus and toasted bread. The finish is very long in the mouth, revealing the typical chalk of Le Mesnil sur Oger and bringing to the wine a distinctive salty, even iodized character. "

Penfolds Grandfather
Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny is aged 20 years. This attractive gift boxed Australian red would make a great gift! Seriously powerful; the very complex bouquet has gingerbread, spice and singed toffee aromas cut by the rancio that comes through on the long, intense, yet elegantly structured and balanced palate. A skilled blending of some younger wine has had the desired effect. Incredbly long, intense and complex. 97 Points.

Clos de La Roilette Fleuri
The 2022 Fleurie (Red Beaujolais Wine), rooted in clay and manganese-rich soil that's more typical of Moulin-à-Vent, is always unique for the appellation, but especially so in 2022 with its ripe, succulent, smoke-tinged palate. Offering up a bouquet of red and black currants intermingled with stewed blackberries, violets, aniseed, cloves and a subtle hint of charcoal-grilled meats, it's sappy and concentrated, with a full-bodied palate built around abundant, fine-grained tannins. 1.5 Litre Bottle.

Sassicaia 1997
Robert Parker calls this classic Italian: "A very good wine for sure, but much lighter and significantly less concentrated than anticipated, this dark ruby-colored Sassicaia exhibits moderate levels of ripeness, herbaceous black currant aromas and flavors, in addition to toasty new oak. Soft, with a surprisingly short, insubstantial finish, this wine looks to be on a rapid evolution track."

Chateau d'Armailhac 2010
Baronne Philippine de Rothschilde Chateau d'Armailhac, France (2010) Grand Cru Classe. To quote Robert Parker again: "Another sensational effort from Philippe Dhaluin, the administrator of Mouton Rothschild, this blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot shows complex floral notes intermixed with forest floor, camphor, black currants and mulberries that all jump from the glass of this aromatic style of d’Armailhac. This wine possesses very good acidity, a surprisingly higher percentage of Merlot than usual, but the quality is impressive, and the good news is that there are 20,000 cases of this full-bodied beauty, which should age nicely for 15-20+ years."

Fonseca Vintage Port 1970
Fonseca’s Finest 1970 Vintage Port was the finest bottle I have encountered. The bouquet opens beautifully with heady scents of clove, ginger, small red cherries, bergamot and allspice, displaying exquisite definition and harmony. The palate follows suit with lovely balance and poise in the mouth, notes of kirsch, shaved ginger and walnut building to an opulent, viscous finish that lacquers the mouth. Yet this bottle shows more control than the bottle tasted four years ago. – Robert Parker
Fonseca, founded in 1815 – owned by the Guimaraens family from 1822 to 1948 – is probably one of the most renowned producers of Vintage Port.
Fonseca’s vintage port wines are produced exclusively from grapes from its own Quintas Cruzeiro and Santo António near the Pinhão as well as the Quinta do Panascal in the Távora valley.
1970 is considered one of the legendary years of Vintage Port: rain in May and June and then very warm temperatures into October not only led to a very good quality grape harvest, but also to high yields, which had a positive effect on the acidity.
Slightly alcoholic, spiciness and fruity notes on the nose; amazingly fresh on the palate, delicately jammy, fruity notes of caramel, orange peel and exotic spices, nice sweetness, fine acidity and good tension. Balanced, multi-layered, excellent, much younger-looking port wine with excellent potential for another 20 – 30 years."

John Jameson Crested Ten Whiskey
From John Jameson & Son, Dublin 700 ml.
Eye: Dark apple juice. Medium rims, splotchy and hang-on drops.
Nose: Apples and varnish (in a good way). Calvados and malt, on the sweeter side for sure. Tinge of oak and fresh tobacco. Strong bourbon cask influence, though there’s Sauternes in here too if I had to guess. Hell of a nose. Palate: Dusty and unique - aged calvados, a filling sensation and oak astringency. Apple strudel, dark char in the back, with so much bready character. Mouthfeel is oaky, brandy-esque, acidic and bright without being hot. Coating and oily, opening coconut and butterscotch. Scratch that - HUGE butterscotch notes.
Finish: Gets creamier with air, rounding out as a buttery Werther’s butterscotch. Long and oily.
Overall: What an experience. Wow.

Johnnie Walker Swing Blended Scotch Whisky
Johnnie Walker Swing blended scotch whisky is one of the world's most exclusive rare scotch whiskies. It is a unique smooth and mellow blend of whiskies aged to the peak of perfection. Swing represents the ideal way to relax and enjoy whisky in style. Biscuity, caramel and floral opening aroma; further air contact stimulates scents of baked bread, toasted bread, buttered popcorn and light smoke. Flavor is dominated by sweet toffee and fudge notes. Sweetest and most buttery of all Johnnie Walker expressions.
- 92/100, Wine Enthusiast
One of the most distinguishing features of Johnnie Walker Swing is its unique bottle design. The bottle has an ergonomic shape, which allows it to rock back and forth without tipping over. This design was an innovative way to serve whisky on board cruise ships and trains, where the rolling motion could make it challenging to keep conventional bottles steady. The elegant bottle design, combined with the smoothness of the whisky inside, made it a popular choice for travelers and whisky enthusiasts alike.
When it comes to the taste, Johnnie Walker Swing offers a rich and balanced profile. Its smooth and mellow character is complemented by sweet notes of honey, caramel, and vanilla, along with hints of dried fruit and spice. The whisky has a delightful warmth that gently caresses the palate, making it a pleasure to savor.

The Singleton of Auchroisk Single Malt Whiskey
1983 10 yr. old 43% ABV 1L.
Auchroisk distillery was built in Banffshire in 1974 to provide malt whisky for the famous blend, J&B. Single malt bottlings are rare. The story goes that the owners thought that customers would find it difficult to pronounce the name Auchroisk, so they issued their releases under the Singleton label.
This also represents a turning point in the Scotch Whisky industry, being one of the first (some reports claim ''The First"") wood finished whisky to hit the market, having been beefed up in some sherry casks. The nose starts off with malt, caramel, fennel seed and nutty Oloroso. Some hints of tar and sulphur in the midground. Moderate notes of mint leaves, tobacco and a funky honey (my nickname). The palate has some peat-like notes, even though Auchroisk's spirit might not be peated. But it's quite organic. There are also plums, apricots and leather. Dry sherry and spicy heat. Floral esters and vanilla. A nice oily texture to it all. The finish is short-ish and slightly drying. Soft fruity sweetness, peach candy and a slight grain note. (www.divingforpearlsblog.com)

Napoleon Courvoisier Cognac (Two Bottles)
Napoleon Courvoisier Cognac
Palate: Lengthy and satisfying. Voluptuous and full taste.
Indulge in a little part of history, with a bottle dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte’s love for Cognac. The Courvoisier Napoleon Cognac is somewhat of an icon; despite the fact that the house of Courvoisier was created 14 years after. While Napoleon himself did not get to try this luxurious spirit, its legacy is long lasting, as Napoleon III made Courvoisier their official Cognac supplier to the Imperial Court in 1869. The eaux-de-vie of this Napoleon Cognac are derived from both the Grande and Petite Champagne terroirs, and are blended together with the utmost expertise and care. This very spirit has had enough influence in the Cognac name to have an age denomination named after it. This Napoleon Cognac has been aged for up to 20 years, and its qualities from the Fine Champagne give it the lengthy finish that so many Cognac lovers desire. The chalky composition of the soil in this region is a result of millions of years of fossilization; now it is one of the most sought-after regions in Cognac, and produces high quality Cognacs such as this one. Cognac Hennessy X.O
In 1870, Maurice Hennessy created Hennessy X.O for his circle of friends and introduced a new style of cognac. Hennessy X.O is the Original, the emblematic icon of the Hennessy Maison.
Deep and powerful, the eaux-de-vie of this Hennessy X.O cognac are aged in young barrels and marked out by their power and energy, but also by their capacity to achieve a great roundness through time.
SWEET NOTES
The palate is warmly embraced by flavors of candied fruit.
RISING HEAT
The intriguing sensation of an intense, rising heat slowly reveals the complex taste of eaux-de-vie patiently aged in oak barrels.
SPICY EDGE
Perception of a strong spicy cognac note, tantalising the lips and palate with its distinct peppery flavor intertwined with a hint of chocolate.
FLOWING FLAMES
A wave of warmth grows, crests and then breaks. A robust presence, full and voluptuous, is felt.
CHOCOLATE LULL
There is the gradual discovery of something very familiar. It is the well-rounded flavor of a rich, dark chocolate.
WOOD CRUNCHES
A striking sensation is suddenly felt – the vigorous ebb and flow of oak notes interlaced with vanilla.
INFINITE ECHO
The evanescent oak notes leave a long, omnipresent finish in their wake. Seemingly endless, it echoes all of the subtleties of each taste and sensation that has preceded it.

XO Cognac Otard Au Chateau de Cognac
On the nose, its roundness reveals a rich harmony of aromas of dawn woodland, with hints of leather.
BARON OTARD XO Gold combines the smoothness of fruity flavours (plum, hazelnuts) with the softness of honey, enhanced by a touch of violet.
Years of maturing of the finest eaux-de-vie in the dim cellars of the chateau have given it a rich amber colour, with vermilion reflections, the sure sign of a cognac of great distinction.

Cosmos
Time for a new original artwork to refresh the look of your home or office? "Cosmos" is a gorgeous painting from early in Heather Craig's career. The Vancouver-based artist's work is informed by continuing studies and observations about life, her volunteer work, and living on the west coast of Canada. The framed painting is an oil on canvas featuring subtle hues and measures a significant size at 4ft by 3.5ft. Created in June 2000. If you would like to see this painting in person, please email events@belfry.bc.ca
