Chambertin Trio
Gevrey-Chambertin, Claude Gugat, 2013 (France)

Charmes-Chambertin, Géantet-Pansiot Grand Cru, 2015 (France)

Gevrey-Chambertin, Mes Cinq Terroirs, Domaine Denis Mortet 2017 (France)

It is particularly exciting to be able to offer this notable “power trio” from Burgundy - France’s other ultra-premium wine region. Wine Spectator, at 92 points, said this of the Gevrey-Chambertin, Claude Gugat, 2013: “Pure, boasting kirsch, raspberry, floral and mineral flavours, all etched into a lean frame. Overall this is elegant and racy.” And according to Burghound.com, it offers “a frank, firm and intense finish.” The Charmes-Chambertin, Géantet-Pansiot 2015 inspired this love letter from Goedhuis: “Deep intense colour, this is full of Black Forest gâteau aromas and flavours. A very dense wine with lovely sweetness of fruit, the tannins are beautifully integrated with layered concentrated black fruits. An exquisite cuvée which will give extraordinary pleasure.” Added Vivino: “Rich, splendid and classic.” And we finish with the similarly impressive Gevrey-Chambertin, Mes Cinq Terroirs, Domaine Denis Mortet 2017, of which Decanter wrote: “This is always one of the best village Gevreys on the market . . . a balanced, spicy, pithy red with glossy tannins, freshness and stylish oak (93 points).” Wine Advocate, similarly impressed, said this: “Bursting with expressive aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, orange rind and licorice. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and charming.”

Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages, 2014 (California)
Approachable, full-bodied, well structured, and elegant, award-winning Cinq Cépages is a true beauty from the northern end of Sonoma Valley. For over 30 years Chateau St. Jean has been making this iconic red and it’s a showcase of the classic “Bordeaux blend” varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The 2014 vintage was well reviewed, getting 92 points from Wine Advocate, and lots of praise: “The 2014 Cinq Cépages has a deep garnet-purple colour and nose of pure, crushed black currants and blackberries plus hints of garrigue, lavender, chocolate box and wild thyme.” Canada’s Natalie MacLean also went with 92: “Cinq Cépages is full-bodied and layered with ripe blackberries, dried garrigue herbs, dark chocolate, and savoury spice flavours on the palate.” It was called a “romantic” wine by Vivino, which went on to add that “delicate, dry tannins hold up the supple fruit beautifully. Very long finish and an elegant wine.”

Black Sage Collection
Cabernet Sauvignon - The nose consists of nice rich cassis, black forest cake, toasted oak, and a hint of leather and spice. The palate is full with flavours of dark cherries, cassis and an undertone of toast and spice. The tannins are approachable and the wine has a long finish.

Merlot - On the nose there are notes of ripe plums, blackberries, vanilla, cloves, and some sweet smoke. The palate has similar flavours of rich ripe fruit and spices with pleasant smoky vanilla notes. The tannins are soft and the finish is long with the flavours lingering long after the last sip.

Cabernet Franc - The nose has pleasant notes of red berries, some red currants, dried strawberries, and smoky mocha notes. The flavours on the nose carry over to the palate. With bright red fruits, mocha and vanilla, and some hints of spice on the finish. The acidity is lively and the tannins are firm yet approachable.

Château de Beaucastel, 2015 (France)
Châteauneuf du Pape is one of France’s most richly flavoured wines, and a particularly celebrated producer is Château de Beaucastel, which hails from the southern part of the Rhone Valley. This venerable Château produces wines that are reliably silky, plush and full-bodied, and it is no surprise that Beaucastel has ardent fans around the world. The 2015 vintage sure impressed the critics, with almost everyone posting 95- to 97-point ratings. James Suckling said it was an “impressive, powerful wine.” Wine Spectator proclaimed it “a stunner from the get-go, with waves of thoroughly seductive boysenberry, plum, blueberry and raspberry reduction forming the core.” Jeb Dunnuck called it “A beauty that offers more depth and richness than just about every other wine in the vintage . . . ripe, sweet tannins and an undeniable opulence.” And Wine Advocate wrote: “Loaded with black cherry fruit and cola-like spice this full-bodied, richly textured wine should drink well for at least 20 years.”

Laughing Stock Portfolio 2019
The blend involves all five classic Bordeaux varietals: 48% merlot, 32% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 4% malbec, and 2% petit verdot. Post ferment, Portfolio spends 20 months in French oak barrels with 48% new French oak and 52% second fill barrels using fruit from three sites on the Naramata Bench and the estate-owned Perfect Hedge Vineyard in Osoyoos. Sweet tobacco and cigar box tones make a solid first impression before the savoury black cherry, black pepper, subtle vanilla, and dense ripe tannins kick in. This wine presents as very drinkable early on in life, but you can cellar this with ease for a decade.

Tantalus
Tantalus Pinot Noir Reserve 2017
East Kelowna, Okanagan Valley, British Columbia, Canada
From Gizmondi: Year three of the Reserve Pinot Noir opens with earthy forest floor notes and a dry, restrained style. The palate is fresh, with florals, more earth, and mushroom, before a light blanket of tannins and sage dust kicks in. You can drink this now with mushroom risotto, glazed ham, or grilled pork, but it will certainly be enhanced by three to five years in the bottle.

Director's Choice
Chateau Musar - Jeune Rose from Isaac Thomas, Executive Director "I had the Musar Red at a barbecue recently and was very pleasantly surprised. It was not on my radar at all. It appeals to my interest in finding quality in countries outside the usual wine nations, and also in trying out less common grapes. I think the grapes are quite standard, but I do not think of Lebanon as a common wine region in Canadian wine stores. The red was out of stock, so getting the Rosé is really a gamble for you. Let me know if it works"

Valckenberg Gewurtraminer 2021 from Michael Shamata, Artistic Director "In 2009, at Divino a wine bar on Stephen Avenue in Calgary, I had my first glass of Gerwüztraminer. I was introduced to it by the late, great Gina Wilkinson— exquisite actor and extraordinary human. And a native of Victoria. I had the great good fortune to direct Gina in a couple of Shakespeare plays—including Much Ado About Nothing, in which she was a glorious Beatrice. Gina and I first worked together at Stratford in 1983—exactly 40 years ago! Gerwürztraminer has been my wine of choice ever since that night in Calgary—and all because of Gina."

The gentlemen also kindly offered up a bottle of Empress Gin, because it is one thing the both agree on!

Long Shadows Saggi, 2018 (Washington State)
For 20 years award-winning Long Shadows has been one of the most respected wineries in Washington State. Inspired by the great wines of Tuscany, their 2018 Saggi is dominated by Sangiovese, with support from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This is a seductively fragrant blend, while the palate brims with cherries, strawberries, and notes of nutmeg. Vinous was particularly charmed, handing out 95 points and this rave: “The wine explodes out of the glass with potpourri and anise tones alongside a beautiful core of red and dark fruits. The palate offers tobacco, milk chocolate and boysenberry flavours, serious depth and concentration, insanely good range and an opulent sense of texture.” After bestowing a 92, Wine Enthusiast added: “The palate is full, bright and flavorful, full of coffee notes threaded throughout. A warm finish caps it off.” And International Wine Report gave it 93 points, then praised “the intoxicating nose of black cherry candy, boysenberry, sandalwood and wet tilled earth.”

Château Mouton Rothschild, 2003 (France)
Ever-opulent Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the truly legendary names from the most prestigious winemaking region on the planet; this superstar of the Pauillac region is a superlative example of what Bordeaux is all about. The 2003 vintage was very popular with most critics, particularly the Wine Advocate, whose rating of 95 came with these comments: “Powerful and extremely tannic, with full-bodied, meaty, dry flavours as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest between 2012-2040+.” Wine Spectator bestowed a 94, and high praise indeed: “Blackberry, cherry, and currant with just a hint of toasted oak. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a lovely combination of ripe fruit and vanilla character. Goes on and on. Long and very stylish, balanced and refined.” And Jancis Robinson, celebrated Master of Wine, had these poetical insights: “Rich and haunting and lovely and complete with both lift and depth. Exciting. Reverberant.”

Château Kirwan, 2006 (France) (two bottles)
Dating back to the 1750s, Château Kirwan is a notable winery in Bordeaux’s famed Margaux appellation, and was ranked a Troisieme Cru (Third Growth) in the 1855 official wine classification. The 2006 vintage earned 91 points from Wine Enthusiast, adding that “the new wood flavours on this wine are well integrated with the velvet fruit textures. The tannins are now an adjunct to the fruit, which shows fresh spice and sweetness. It’s a fine, balanced wine, delicate and perfumed.” Calling it quite complex and well defined, Wine Advocate noted that it “represented a very good performance from Kirwan.” Wine Spectator appreciated the “lovely fruit in this wine, with berry, chocolate and plum aromas and flavours. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. A very balanced Kirwan.” And Vivino was enthusiastic about the wine’s many virtues: “Delicate, elegant and beautiful floral perfume, light and soft in tannins with berry notes on the palate. Wow! This wine is amazing.”

Double Canyon Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, 2017 (Washington State)
Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020 (California)
Get ready to party with this tasty package! Let’s start our Cabernet-themed road trip in B.C. with the 2021 Burrowing Owl. Vivino’s writers were full of praise, from “Burrowing Owl is always over-delivering in quality” to “definitely a special bottle for those who like a good cab sav.” Double Canyon, a relatively new winery in Washington State, is already getting serious attention. Its 2017 Red Mountain release elicited these remarks from CellarTracker: “Depth and opulence are the keywords here. The palate is generous and finessed, with oak making its gentle yet undeniable presence felt.” Added Vivino: “Utterly unique and delicious.” And our tasty trip ends in California’s Paso Robles region, with the 2020 Austin Hope. No less an authority than The Wine Authority had this praiseful comment, “On the palate, it’s a big, powerful, modern-styled wine layered with heaps of juicy blackberry and cherry fruit. Full-bodied and rich.” As Liza Minnelli (almost) used to sing: “Life is a cabernet, old chum.”

The Hospices de Beaune Premier Cru, Cuvée Dames Hospitalieres 2017 is a grand expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir. The writers at Vivino were full of praise, including this appealing description: “The nose is packed full of youthful raspberry, red cherry and strawberry, underpinned by graphite, dry forest floor, polished oak and savoury notes. The palate is young & tangy.” According to TotalWine.com this Hospitalieres “offers a floral bouquet on the nose, then generous, finely tuned fruit right across the palate, balanced by subtle tannins, leading to an ethereal finish.” And after rating it 90-93, WineChronicles added, “Quite a bit of structure and aromatic opulence!”

Mission Hill Oculus, 2019 (British Columbia)
Mission Hill is the Okanagan’s grandest winery, and their flagship wine, Oculus, is appropriately elegant and ravishing. Quickly seen as iconic when it debuted in 1997, Oculus has evolved over the years and this latest version is, according to renowned wine critic Anthony Gismondi, one of the very best and worthy of 94 points: “This vintage delivers a powerful, fresh, and elegant structure, with Merlot driving red and blue fruit flavours, while the Cabernet Franc enriches the flavour with herbaceous undertones and the Cabernet Sauvignon supports the length on the palate.” It was called “big, rich, and lush” by Vivino, which went on to praise it as “Brilliant – this wine is amazing! Bold and dry, with cherry, blackberry, plum, tobacco, and oak. It’s a lovely, Bordeaux-style wine.” And the 2019 clearly won over the reviewer for Maxim, who wrote: “The wine is lovely – long and structured, with deep currant and blue fruits and a touch of forest depth.”

Langmeil is an important winery in Australia’s famed Barossa Valley, and this “Valley Floor” Shiraz is sourced (and named) from the premium strip of land along the valley bottom. And note that this auction lot is a Jeroboam, a literal armful of wine in a MASSIVE 4.5 litre bottle! WineDiva was a big fan, which is made clear by her mouthwatering description: “Outstanding wine with a true hedonistic character. Notes of mulberry, sarsaparilla, black cherry, rich mocha, finely ground pepper, and brown spices. It is equally opulent on the palate; salty and sweet with generous fruit, supple weight, and plush texture. The finish is nearly unending.” Various writers at Vivino had lots to say, from “Bold but beautifully well balanced” and “Great Shiraz, very smooth, elegant at a fair price” to “Fantastic wine. Dark fruit, oak, leather, firm tannins, long finish, huge body” and “Beautifully balanced and complex. Exceptional.”

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, 1996 (France)
Situated on two plateaus between Pauillac and Margaux, Saint-Julien is an important sub-region of Bordeaux’s beloved Medoc area. And one of its most highly regarded “second growths” is Château Ducru-Beaucaillou; this is one of the oldest wine-producing estates in the Medoc, and is known for its concentrated, flavourful, and well-structured wines. Their impressive 1996 vintage has been getting serious raves, including 94 points from Int’l Wine Cellar, with these comments: “Deep, super-ripe aromas of dark berries, black cherry, and bitter chocolate. Dense, sweet and wonderfully rich; a lovely combination of palate-caressing chocolatey fruit and firm underlying structure.” Wine Advocate bestowed a rating of 93 points, as did Neal Martin’s Wine Journal, adding “Another great showing from one of the estate’s finest wines of the 1990s. The palate has a svelte texture that belies the firm tannins engendered by the ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. It just builds and builds to a very refined finish that can only leave a smile on your face. Delectable.”

Tomato Wheels Lambrusco, N/V (Italy)
The world of premium wine is certainly full of rewards, but it can sometimes get a bit, well, serious. And if you ever need to lighten the mood just a bit, consider uncorking a bottle of Lambrusco, the sparkling red wine from Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region. There used to be a preponderance of second-rate, sweetish Lambrusco on the shelves, but latterly the quality has increased notably. Case in point is the Tomato Wheels Lambrusco, which is sourced from a 100-year-old vineyard in Italy but is produced and marketed by a wine-loving Canadian entrepreneur. According to MyWinePal, Tomato Wheels is “a bit more than off-dry, fuller-bodied, round, almost mouth-filling, with abundant tiny creamy bubbles and medium-plus intensity flavours of juicy berries, plums, violets, and a touch of red apples – a quality Lambrusco with juicy fruit flavours.” Vinearts.ca adds that it is “bursting with notes of violet, cold blueberries, lavender and crème fraîche – with cheek-gushing acidity and a little rip of tannin.” Yum!

Château La Serre, 2018 (France)
While France will never again dominate the wine world the way it used to, this trio exemplifies why the French will always be able to seduce the palates of wine lovers. Let’s start with the Château Sociando-Mallet, a Bordeaux from the Haut-Médoc that earned 94 points and heaps of praise from James Suckling: “This has a pretty nose with dark spices, nut shell and cedar notes with a dark fruit backbone. Refined and nicely balanced with velvety texture.” Vinous added that it was “full of grace and power.” The upper Loire Valley gives us the Domaine Vacheron Sancerre, a vibrant Sauvignon Blanc that was hailed as “ripe and concentrated” by Wine Enthusiast. Not to be out-blurbed, Vivino called it “Very elegant and delicate, with amazing fruit notes and a perfect acidity.” And it’s back to Bordeaux for the Château La Serre, a Saint-Emilion that Decanter called “Silky and rich, with aromatic black fruits and a complex layering of cut herbs, licorice, and sweet spices. Brilliant.”

Dairyman, the newest addition to the Belle Glos portfolio, is sourced from the Russian River Valley and is a lush and boldly fruity delight. The 2020 vintage got 92 points from wine maven Natalie Maclean, who noted: “Dry, medium-plus-bodied, this PN is rich and generous with ripe dark cherry, blackberry, fine herbs, softly spiced and finishing with a velvety mocha kiss.” According to Brix26, “the acidity is as vibrant as the colour, lifting the medley of fruit to lavish heights and augmenting the spicy tones.” And after awarding this Dairyman 94 points, drizzly.com wrote: “This rich, complex and elegant wine captivates the senses with its deep ruby colour and fragrant aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, and vanilla. On the palate, the wine offers a harmonious balance of fruit, oak, and tannins, creating a silky-smooth mouthfeel and a long, satisfying finish.” Thirsty yet?

Dow’s Vintage Port, 1994 (Portugal)
Dow’s, for over 200 years a leading Port producer, is known for superbly concentrated wines that mature to a superlative, racy elegance. And that is certainly true of this vintage, as 1994 is considered to be one of the finest years for Port in the second half of the twentieth century. Here’s Wine Spectator explaining its ranking of 97 points: “A blackstrap, powerful Port. Black, with intense aromas of raspberries, raisins, flowers and stems. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a long, rich finish.” Wine Advocate was equally besotted, as is made clear by this praise: “It’s a beauty, with all that Dow power and structure that I’ve loved over the years. Intensely concentrated in flavour, without being jammy, this lingers on the gripping finish after starting with a touch of mint.” Decanter, too, was a big fan: “Deep in colour, this is . . . sweet and succulent initially, with a bitter-sweet backdrop, slightly rustic too, with some plummy fruit underneath. Lovely weight and depth.”

JL Chave Selection - Mon Coeur Côtes du Rhône Rouge (1.5L)
Wine growers in the northern Rhône since 1481, the Chave family (currently led by Gérard and son Jean-Louis) represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne on the planet. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut, and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was then that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region.
Besides the estate work, Chave also has a négociant line, J. L. Selection, for which they source grapes from various areas in the northern Rhône. Using their wine-making techniques, this approach allows J.L. Chave to offer wines that are more accessible. Their Mon Coeur Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of excellent plots in Vinsobres, Visan, Buisson, and Estargues. As with all things Chave, quality is paramount even at the entry level.

Domaine Lapierre - Morgon 2021 (1.5L)
Marcel Lapierre took over the family domaine in 1973. The big event in his winemaking career, was his adoption of natural practices as preached by Jules Chavet, a chemist and researcher that fought against the introduction of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in the 1950s. Lapierre, together with Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, worked together to establish a natural approach for wine in Beaujolais.
This group of vignerons called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all, and avoiding chaptalization whenever possible.
Marcel’s mantle is now taken by his son Matthieu and his daughter Camille, who have introduced biodynamic farming to the domaine.
Their eleven hectares of land is mostly decomposed granite, and the vines are 45 years old, on average. Grapes are picked at their ripest, fermentation takes place with wild yeasts, and the wines are aged for nine months in used oak foudres. Fruit is a hallmark as is robustness imbued with a spectacular brightness.

Clos de la Roilette - Cuvée Tardive Fleurie 2021 (1.5L)
The Clos de la Roilette, a lieu-dit in the village of Fleurie, covers nine hectares of one of the best slopes in the Beaujolais Crus. The clos has an eastern exposure, borders the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, and produces wines that are beautiful when young and have the capacity to age 5-10 years, depending on the vintage.
In the 1920’s, when the Fleurie appellation was first created, the former landowner was infuriated with losing the Moulin-à-Vent appellation under which the clos had previously been classified. He created a label, using a photograph of his racehorse Roilette, and used the name Clos de la Roilette without mentioning Fleurie. The owner vowed not to sell a drop of his wine on the French market and the production went to Switzerland, Germany and England.
By the mid-1960s, the owner’s heirs had lost interest in the clos and a large portion of the land had gone wild and untended. In 1967, Fernand Coudert bought this poorly maintained estate and replanted the vineyards. His son Alain joined him in 1984, and has been the winemaker since.
The Couderts say their particular terroir (mainly clay and manganese), and the age of their vines account for the richness of their wine. It has a deep blackcurrant color with a hint of purple, a restrained nose of crème de cassis, a rich, full mouth with aromas of cassis, black cherries, and a nutty character, and finishes with zesty acidity. This is a wine that ages gracefully and takes on the aromatic character of a Pinot Noir.
Besides their regular Clos de la Roilette Fleurie, the Couderts have a selection made from old vines, their Cuvée Tardive, with greater depth and longevity than the regular wine.

Art Gallery of Victoria Passes & Books
Blue and White by AGGV Curator of Asian Art, Dr. Heng Wu

This beautiful hardcover book features a vast selection of objects from AGGV collections, and tells a story of blue-and-white porcelain first manufactured in China during the 14th century that eventually debuted on the world stage. Inspired by the exhibition, the catalogue surveys how blue-and-white ceramics went 'viral,’ and was imitated and innovated around the globe. Look back on the journey that blue-and-white has taken, from its formation and through its variations, and discover a global character infused with local flavor.

A celebration of the life and work of Canadian artist Anthony Thorn. A conpendium of texts, essays, and works by Anthony Thorn, with essays by Robert Amos and Garry Gaudet, and contributions from Lyn Goldman. Edited by Lyndon Grove, Ihor Holubizky and Brent Raycroft. Introduction by John G. Hampton & Janyce Ronson. Co-produced by the AGGV and the MacKenzie Art Gallery.
