Fine Wine
Chateau Cheval Blanc Saint-Emillion Grand Cru 1999
One of only four Saint-Émilion estates to merit a Grand Cru designation, Château Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most well known wines.

The 1999 vintage is a blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, with Cheval Blanc being considered the most esteemed Cab Franc-based wine in the world.

Very much a celebrity, it has been featured in many movies and TV shows, having had cameos in episodes of Rumpole of the Bailey and Inspector Morse, and various films such as Ratatouille, Sideways, and the James Bond thriller Never Say Never Again.

Appropriately, this wine “star” has many fans amongst the critics, including Robert Parker whose Wine Advocate awarded the 1999 vintage 93 points and mouth-watering praise: “Once past the blockbuster bouquet of menthol, leather, black fruits, licorice, and mocha, the wine reveals medium body, extraordinary elegance, purity, and sweet, harmonious flavours . . . this is a seamless beauty of finesse, charm, and concentration.”

The Wine Spectator was similarly impressed, calling the wine “opulent, yet reserved, and beautiful. Offering so much finesse and beauty, this is a polished and gorgeous Cheval.”

Two writers at CellarTracker recently awarded 95 and 96, and suggested that this vintage’s time in the cellar was coming to an end. “It’s outstanding – such complexity, lovely long finish. It’s perfect now,” wrote one, with the other scribe adding: “Splendid, simply splendid, at its prime now, don’t wait too much longer.”

Pacific North West Collection
Here’s an appealing trio of powerful reds from the Pacific Northwest.

The Winemaker’s Cut Syrah is a single-vineyard production from the Okanagan’s award-winning Lunessence Winery. Aged for 14 months on oak, this deeply coloured, fruit-forward wine offers flavours of red plum, pepper, olives, and smoky bacon.

The adjoining Similkameen Valley is home to the well-regarded Orofino Winery, whose Passion Pit Cabernet Sauvignon has always been very popular with the critics, particularly this 2013 vintage. The writers at Vivino were certainly fans, with such comments as “Smoky, meaty, spicy, delicious!!!” and “Leathery, licorice, dried fruits and dark fruit, real nice.”

And heading south to Washington State’s Horse Heaven Hills region, the Winery Alexandria Nicole regularly gets applause for its bold and powerful Jet Black Syrah. The 2016 vintage earned 93 points from Wine Spectator, with this comment: “A sophisticated Syrah, refined and tightly focused, yet expressive, with huckleberry, bay leaf and smoked pepper flavours.”

VHR Phillips Family Farming 2015
Vine Hill Ranch dates from 1959 when it was launched by the Phillips family, which over three generations has evolved from grapegrowing to winemaking.

They focus exclusively on Cabernet Sauvignon, and their Phillips Family Farming VHR is prized by serious Cab drinkers for a silky mouthfeel backed up by an intense, powerful core of ripe black fruit.

This 2015 vintage scored in the mid-90s with several wine magazines and reviewing sites. But the only tasting notes available online were posted by three reviewers at CellarTracker.

Here are some quotes: “Everything about this wine is so fine. There’s a great juxtaposition between the dark fruits and the bright freshness the wine brings.”

“This is the kind of California Cab that . . . reminds you why you got serious about wine in the first place.”

“The textural purity of the wine is what jumps out: a soft, almost voluptuous satiny finish, sweet yet tart, an endless finish.”

Yum!

Glaetzer Amon-Ra Shiraz 2017
Deep colour, with a dark chocolate aroma, the palate chewy and textural with abundant tannins and stacks of pepper, spice, graphite, cola, blackberry flavours, and great density.

The concentration and density of flavour is matched by its tremendous length and satisfying aftertaste. The tannins are abundant and mouth-coating, stopping short of grippy but certainly persuasive.

A wonderful wine, tremendously flavoursome, profound and persistent, with a core of lush sweet fruit ably balanced by masses of tannin. A very big but balanced wine of great quality.

2013 Napa Valley Futo Wines OV/SL
Here’s a beauty from California! Napa Valley winemaker Tom Futo is famed for his Futo OV / SL, a full-bodied Bordeaux blend that is sourced from both his Oakville and Stags Leap estate vineyards. The 2013 was a stunner, with James Suckling giving it 97 points, then adding: “Very pretty and classic in every sense of the word.” CellarTracker, similarly wowed, wrote that “On the palate, this wine was magnificent . . . a complex array of black cherries, blackberry jam, plums, licorice, and mocha with an earthiness that added structure to the wine.” Not to be out-blurbed, Vinous declared that “The 2013 is simply fabulous. All the elements fall into place in a gracious, effortless wine endowed with pure class.” Comments from Vivino ranged from “Another great example of why you could drink Napa Cab every night” to “Stunning. Truly a spectacular wine.” And it’s appropriate that so collectable a bottle has been signed by the winemaker.

Tour of Italy
Italy offers an exceptional variety of wines, and this septet reflects that in a particularly tasty way.

The Argiano Brunello got ratings in the mid to high 90s, with heaps of praise (“A structured and impressive wine”; “This is a terrific wine . . . expressive and exuberant”).

Nearly as impressive ratings greeted the Masi Costasera Amarone, as well as exciting critical comment (“Full bodied and elegant”; “The wine feels rich and velvety, yet finishes dry and spicy”).

Made entirely from Nebbiolo grapes, the 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco averaged 95-point reviews, with raves to match (“A tight and beautiful wine”; “a stunner”; “delicious now and is only going to get better”).

Occhipinti SP68 is a fresh, slightly aromatic white from Sicily that is considered “elegant and full of character.”

Chianti Classico fans will savour the Il Grigio da San Felice (“A warm sweet mélange of red fruit, baking spice and smoky woodland . . . lush and ripe”).

Also from sunny Sicily, the Passo Nerello Mascalese has intense aromatics and spicy, wild berry flavours.

And there’s Giusto Rosalia Prosecco to finish the party (“This is a very upbeat and lively Prosecco”).

1982 Tignanello 1.5 litres
Tignanello, the first of the “Super Tuscans,” was launched in 1971 by the fabled Antinori family, one of Tuscany’s most renowned winemaking dynasties.

Because they defied the strict winemaking rules of Chianti and used Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in the blend, Tignanello by law was designated a mere “table wine.” Ah, but then it started winning major international awards and eventually became an iconic, ultra-premium brand.

This 1982 vintage was given a 91-point rating by Wine Spectator, which appreciated its “concentrated ripe raspberry and chocolatey flavors.” Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate had an eloquent, admiring description: “The 1982 is a mature and evolved wine. The bouquet offers tones of cured meat, savory spice, tar, old leather and dried fruit or prune. Silky tannins characterize the smooth finish.”

And you’ll double your pleasure with this 1.5L “magnum” bottle.

6 pack of Lapierre Morgon Cru Beaujolais - 2010-2015 vintage
Although the Gamay-based wines of Beaujolais are usually regarded as little more than amiably quaffable, the family-run Morgon domaine – which has been managed along organic principles for many years – produces serious wines that are among the most famous in all Beaujolais.

What is on offer here is a “vertical” sextet of well-aged Lapierre Morgons, from 2010 to 2015, representing a fantastic opportunity to explore Beaujolais at its best.

The reviews for these wines are consistently impressive, year to year: Vivino is clearly a fan (“Notes of ripe cherries, plums, leather, dried herbs and some balsamic notes. Elegantly structured, complex and smooth”), as is CellarTracker (“Ruby red, already showing some orange glow. Beautiful nose with ripe cherry, raspberry, leather, clove . . . an elegant and tasty wine”).

The 2015 was particularly well received, earning 93 points from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, with this praise: “The palate is nicely structured, brimming over with energy. This is just a superb Morgon.”

Hospices de Beaune Premier Cru 2017 (1.5l)
Hospices de Beaune is a former charitable almshouse in Burgundy dating from 1443. This legendary estate has a patchwork of more than 100 plots, from which 50 different wines are created.

The Hospices de Beaune Premier Cru, Cuvee Dames Hospitalieres 2017 is a grand expression of Burgundian Pinot Noir.

The writers at Vivino were full of praise, including this appealing description: “The nose is packed full of youthful raspberry, red cherry and strawberry, underpinned by graphite, dry forest floor, polished oak and savoury notes. The palate is young & tangy.” According to TotalWine.com this Hospitalieres “Offers a floral bouquet on the nose, then generous, finely tuned fruit right across the palate, balanced by subtle tannins, leading to an ethereal finish.” And after rating it 90-93, WineChronicles added, “Quite a bit of structure and aromatic opulence!”

This auction lot is a magnum, so a great dinner party is pretty well guaranteed . . . .

Hampton Water Rose
This wine is the result of a collab between Jon Bon Jovi, his son Jesse, and famed French winemaker Gérard Bertrand.

A blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre that's aged in oak barrels, it's smooth and silky with juicy acidity and sunny aromas and flavours - think nectarine, apricot, grapefruit zest and wild herbs.

Savour it with grilled salmon or chicken pizza bianco.

Domaine Rolet Magnum Lot
You can't go wrong with this Domaine Rolet Duo.

Domaine Rolet was founded in the 1942 by Désiré Rolet.

The children eventually took over the business, and the winery gradually acquired premium vineyards across all four Jura appellations: Arbois, Côtes du Jura, Étoile, and Château-Chalon.

Their 65ha of estate vineyards makes them the largest family owned winery in the Jura. The estate only vinifies the grapes grown from their vineyards using sustainable viticulture methods.

Chateau Lafon-Rochet
Château Lafon-Rochet is located in Bordeaux’s St.-Estèphe area, and its wines are rated Grand Cru Classé. The 2016 Lafon-Rochet, which is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, was a huge hit with critics. Let’s start with vinous.com, whose 95 points was backed up by enticing comments: “The more you nose this wine, the more its complexity becomes apparent . . . this is a fabulous Lafon-Rochet.” American wine writer Antonio Galloni also piled on the praise: “The 2016 Lafon-Rochet is positively stellar. Bright, translucent and super-expressive, the 2016 is pure class. Don’t miss it.” Calling it “joyful St.-Estèphe,” the venerable James Suckling complimented the wine for its “great balance of ripeness, lively acidity, velvety tannins . . . and elegant finish.” Farr Vintners wrote approvingly that, “The palate is firm with ripe tannins but shows juicy red and black fruit with a touch of allspice. Savoury and classic on the finish.” And let’s hear briefly from wine maven Jancis Robinson: “Pure pleasure.”

Château Dereszla Tokaji Aszú 2000 and 2006
Hungary’s elegantly delicious Tokaji Aszú dessert wines are the oldest and among the most treasured of the world’s sweet tipples.

This auction lot, from esteemed producer Château Dereszla, includes one bottle each of the 2000 and 2006; all are designated the much-desired “5 Puttonyos,” which places them at the luxuriously sweet end of the Tokaji spectrum.

The 2000 vintage got raves from Vivino: “Amazing wine! Dried fruits on the nose with apricot, peach and pineapple. Mmmmm. One of the best wines of my life!”

The 2006 earned 95 points from Wine Spectator, who had some good advice: “For savoury pairings, try it with charcuterie, aged cheeses or rich, fatty dishes like duck confit. The wine shines as an accompaniment to simple desserts like shortbread or spiced bread pudding.”

Dessert Wines Trio
Here is an appealing trio of dessert wines, considered “good value” by most critics.

Hailing from Bordeaux, the 2002 Château La Rame Sainte-Croix-du-Mont is a lush and balanced blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. CellarTracker awarded it 91 points, noting “the medium-bodied palate is more complex, with herbal, honeyed mango, peach, nectarine, and pear notes.”

Moving north to the Loire Valley yields the 2015 Château de la Roulerie Coteaux du Layon, which is made entirely from Chenin Blanc that has been botryized (a “good” disease that shrivels the grapes and concentrates the sugars).

Wrote Vivino: “Wow, this wine is special. Honey, apricot, dried pineapple, lemon, beeswax, orange peel, and pear. Drink it!”

Our tasty tour ends in South Africa with the 1996 Nederburg Noble Late Harvest.

With aromas of orange peel, peach, apricot and honey and a similar palate profile, this one’s eager to please.

Notes Vivino: “Great, sweet, floral and fruity. I could drink this all night long.”

Magnum Lot from Vessel
When it comes to France, most wine aficionados stick with Burgundy, Bordeaux, and the Rhone. They are certainly missing out, as this trio of tasty magnums makes abundantly clear.

Let’s start with the Tibouren Clos Cibonne which, says WineTheory, is “a wonderful expression of an ancient grape from Provence . . . the palate a joy of soft, silky fruits.”

In the Jura region of eastern France, Trousseau is a key red varietal. A fine example is the 1996 Domaine Rolet Arbois; according to Vivino, it’s “a ripe, juicy wine with fine tannins intermingling with currants and other red fruit. Flavours and aromas of currants, raspberries and strawberries.”

Chinon is a famed commune in the Loire Valley specializing in Cabernet Franc, with Bernard Baudry being the recognized master. His 2018 Chinon clearly excited Vivino: “Incredible value . . . this Chinon is an example of how 100% Cab Franc can make a brilliant wine.” Three very different bottles, three great wine experiences. Magnum force, indeed.

Chateau Haut-Baille Grand Cru Classe 2005
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2005 Haut Bailly is rapidly turning into a glorious wine. You instantly fall in love with the purity on the nose, luscious red cherries, wild strawberry and blueberry.

This is still youthful and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a structured opening like many in this vintage.

It exerts a gentle grip in the mouth, quite tensile and linear and perhaps just tightening up a tad toward the finish.

It is biding its time, but it will repay those who cellar this outstanding 2005 for another four or five years. Tasted March 2017."

Chateau 2008 Hosanna Pomerol
Described as a “jewel-like” vineyard in the heart of the Pomerol region of Bordeaux, Château Hosanna lies adjacent to such legendary neighbours as Château Lafleur and Château Pétrus.

Their 2008 vintage, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, clearly bewitched Robert Parker, who wrote:

“The outstanding 2008 Hosanna . . . possesses the extraordinary complexity and aromatic intensity of a great vintage of Cheval Blanc. Unctuously-textured with a dense purple colour, excellent richness, and dense black fruits intermixed with forest floor notes . . . the wine’s purity is awesome.”

Wine Enthusiast, also a big fan, bestowed 93 points and these comments: “Austere wine, its tannins pushing forward to give power and structure. It is dense, concentrated, with layer upon layer of bitter coffee and dark fruit flavours, acidity, and sweet tannins.”

To which added Wine Spectator, “Fig, clove, and tobacco flavours are dark and alluring in this muscular red.”

Chateau de Pez Saint-Estephe 1976
Founded in the 15th century, Château de Pez is located in the northern part of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux’s Left Bank region. Thanks to the quality of its production, Château de Pez is counted among the most highly reputed crus of the Médoc and was reclassified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in 2003. They produce a bold and dry red that is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Here are some comments by the scribes at Vivino: “Château de Pez is one of my favourites among the Cru Bourgeois. In 1976 it was splendid. Earth, tobacco and herbal notes on the nose. Medium body, medium plus acidity. Mushroom, earth and red fruit in this lovely blend.” CellarTracker also took notice, making these (admittedly out-of-date) comments: “Promising and attractive, slightly developed fruity bouquet. The wine has character, and tannin, fruit, oak and acidity are very well integrated.” Please note: This elderly vintage was deemed “completely mature” over a decade ago, so promises to be interesting moreso than glorious.

Beronia Gran Reserva 2013 Tioja
The Rioja region of north-central Spain produces some of that country’s finest reds, and the Beronia Gran Reserva 2013 is an enticing example of just how complex, balanced, sophisticated, and charming a Rioja can be. American wine expert James Suckling gave this vintage 91 points, adding, “Mealy, sweet spices with savory, plummy fruit and some earthy, leathery undertones. Some tobacco leaf, too. This is a juicy, elegant expression of Rioja with refined tannins and a subtle, ethereal finish.” Wine Spectator bestowed 92 points, and did some cheerleading. “Drinking superbly now, the Beronia not only comes from a standout Rioja vintage but offers superb value for money. The palate is full-bodied . . . with superb structure. This wine is simply made for food.” And Vivino had even more fulsome praise: “Fantastic Rioja. Deep red, almost black. Really well balanced, full-bodied and with a lingering aftertaste. This one is a masterpiece.”

Cognac Trio
Cognac fans will love this trio, all designated Very Special Old Pale (VSOP means that the youngest Cognac in the blend must be at least four years old). Produced by the 230-year-old Cognac house, Otard (and endorsed by the rather younger rapper Jay-Z),

D’usse VSOP is quite new on the scene. According to DrinkHacker, the D’usse has “a relatively modest profile: Wood, raisins, orange, with a finish that recalls a few baking spices, particularly nutmeg.”

It won a prestigious Double Gold in San Francisco in 2021.

Hennessy is one of the world’s best-known Cognac brands; their VSOP “serves the archetypal profile of VSOP. Intense toasted oak notes mingle with caramel, rich golden raisins, and dried apricots. Licorice and vanilla pop out on the finish to provide a sweet send-off.”

Courvoisier, much loved for nearly 200 years, is one of the “big four” Cognac houses. Their VSOP, also a medal winner, recently got this praise: “With a nose of sweet Mirabelle plum, toffee, and jasmine, the Cognac displays ripe and dried fruit of black plum, raisins, and Bing cherry, with a spice-laden finish.”

Poplar Grove 2016 Cabernet Franc
Winemaker Notes
Traditional Bordeaux vinification techniques have been used to create an elegant and age-worthy Cabernet Franc.
For each of the component lots, bunches were handpicked and sorted in the vineyard. The berries were crushed separately and cold soaked for two days before fermentation.
Malolactic fermenta-tion occurred in barrel over the winter and finished in the spring of the following year.

The wines from each vineyard lot were kept separate in 30% new oak and a combination of two to three year old French oak barrels for twenty one months. Our Cabernet Franc was further developed in bottle for twelve months prior to release. Ready upon release or cellar up to 10 years.

Champagne
Champagne Duo
Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne (France)
Moët & Chandon Rosé Imperial Champagne (France)

Nothing says, “It’s a party!” quite like French champagne. This dynamic duo starts with Veuve Clicquot, a true classic that is a traditional blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes.

According to wine maven Natalie MacLean there are “lime zest, green apple and freshly baked bread aromas on the nose, with a terrific persistence of bubbles on the palate. Why wait for New Year’s?”

An equally esteemed sparkler is the Moët & Chandon Rosé Imperial. Once again, Natalie MacLean has tasty comments and advice: “A superb rosé Champagne with aromas of small field strawberries. Crisp and refreshing, with a festive ballet slipper hue. Pair with seafood.”

American critic James Suckling is also a fan: “This is brimming with red-berry character and has a striking interplay of tannins, lively acidity and discreet creaminess.”

2005 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
Taittinger is synonymous with elegance in the elite world of Champagne, especially their Blanc de Blancs, which is made entirely from white-wine grapes.

A truly delightful experience is offered by their 2005 “Comtes de Champagne,” which has gotten numerous ratings in the mid-90s, with mouth-watering comments to match.

Jeb Dunnuck called it “a deep, rich, full-bodied beauty that packs serious amounts of fruit and texture . . . [with] beautiful mid-palate depth and a great, great finish.”

Called “impressive” by Wine Enthusiast, it was also praised for its “elegance, intensity and richness.”

Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar had this to say: “Vibrant pear and melon aromas are complicated by suggestions of ginger, brioche and smoky minerals . . . . There’s a Burgundian thing going on here that quite intriguing.”

Wine Spectator also laid on the praise: “Shows lovely balance, with a china-like backbone of acidity, finely meshed with a creamy mousse and rich and toasty flavours of roasted hazelnut, creamed apple, lemon parfait and spun honey.”

Dom Pérignon Champagne, 1990 (France)
“I am drinking the stars!” exclaimed Dom Pérignon, the Benedictine monk who accidentally invented Champagne in 1693 – and discerning sippers have been chasing those bubbly stars ever since.

Made by Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon is one of the most exalted Champagne brands in existence, with the 1990 vintage widely regarded as outstanding.

Wrote Robert Parker: “The profoundly rich 1990 Dom Pérignon is a creamy-textured, full styled offering . . . and appears capable of surpassing the fabulous ’85 and ’82.”

The more down-to-earth FineWineSelect added, “Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish.”
