Let’s Create Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs)!
Gather six people to paint pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs, a wonderful way to get creative as a family or group of friends by exploring this ancient wax-resist art form.
All supplies (eggs, wax, styluses, dyes, etc.) provided for six participants. The workshop leader can host the group in her Fairfield home or come to your Victoria location.
This activity is appropriate for children ages 7 and up. Adults must accompany minors (because of open flame and hot wax!). Yes, the eggs are raw (boiling the eggs affects how well the dye takes), and no, the eggs cannot be eaten afterward.

ARTemis driftwood sculpture by Tanya Bub
Local eco-artist, Tanya wrote “ARTemis the foot archer is the embodiment of determination, mental focus and physical prowess. I intentionally selected a pose that would be very difficult to represent to test the limits of my own abilities. ARTemis is both visually and physically balanced and can stand entirely unsupported, very challenging with a top-heavy, asymmetrical “bipedal” sculpture made of materials of varying density and weight. I think it very likely that she is singular in being the only foot archer made from driftwood in the world and may well remain so. Her uniqueness and her act of exceptional physicality is a testament to the capabilities of the human spirit.”

ARTemis is made of driftwood collected by the artist along the beaches of Vancouver Island and assembled with a custom mortar made of wood glue and handmade paper. The wood echoes the bone, sinew and muscle of the human body underscoring our own connection to the natural world. The piece can be displayed indoors or in a covered outdoor space.

Dimensions: 7’ (with chair) x 5” x 16”. She is approximately 48” without the chair.

“Me & My Shadow” wood carving by Bruce Schneider.
Folk art, approximately 20" high x 20" long. Inspired by the notion of Good Angel/Bad Angel or The Battle of Light Over Dark. Note, the good angel is winning!

Self-taught wood carver local artist Bruce Schneider (1949 – 2020) developed quite a following in Victoria in the 1990s. Many front porches featured his whirly gigs, which were sometimes done as caricatures of the homeowner. Bruce was also a skilled calligrapher and in his later years was known to haunt the thrift stores in Sidney for small items to feature in his miniature shadow boxes.

Margo Cooper, “Seek Peace”
Painting 24x24”. Margo is now the most senior member of the Gage Artists Collective and continues to be very active on the Board of Directors and the Membership Committee. “My method is to begin with layers of colour, applied straight from the tube in combinations of 2 or more at the same time. The mixing happens on the canvas. Various textures and patterns are created by the scraping action of the tool and paint over paint. Once that layer is down, I go in with a brush and create my images with white paint by “removing” what I don’t want, very much like a sculptor removing the material around their subject. The number of white layers varies – completely or only partially obscuring what’s below. Images may be enhanced by scratching into the paint or defining outlines with coloured pencils. This way of working satisfies my urge to sculpt and there is almost always a figurative element, sometimes quite hidden, in my paintings.”

Pacific Opera Victoria’s 2025/2026 Season 2 tickets
Section A tickets to the performance of choice in the 25/26 season.

THE TURN OF THE SCREW | Benjamin Britten | OCTOBER 22 – 28, 2025
Based on the novella by Henry James that tells the story of a young, inexperienced governess sent to a country house to care for two children, whom she is gradually convinced have been corrupted by the ghosts haunting the house. Can the children be saved, or is something even more sinister at play?

TOSCA | Giacomo Puccini | FEBRUARY 18 – 24, 2026
Tosca is an emotional roller coaster – both timeless and timely. In a world where the very idea of truth is negotiated, how do we know to trust ourselves and stay true to our own truth? This co-production with Vancouver Opera of Puccini‘s richly romantic score is one of the composer’s finest works.

ORPHEUS & EURYDICE | Christoph Gluck| APRIL 22 – 28, 2026
Based on the famous Greek myth of the musician Orpheus who conquers the spirits of hell using the power of music to bring his love back from the underworld. Welcoming back Victoria’s own Josh Lovell in the title role, this piece will be one of the first explorations of French Baroque in the company’s history.
