Copper Thunderbird Bracelet by Sammy Dawson
Artist's Bio: Kwakwaka'wakw artist Sammy Dawson was born in Vancouver, BC in the mid 1970's. While growing up mainly in Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island; Sammy carved his first piece, a thunderbird plaque, with his uncle David Robertson when he was just 12 years old. He watched his grandfather William 'Billy-Bird' Roberston, carve masks and bent boxes that he made for family potlatches. After watching his uncles David, Alfred and Sampson for some time, Sammy started carving masks on his own getting pointers along the way from 'T-bone' John Jacobson. He then apprenticed under Simon Dick, who helped hone his mask making. Sammy learned cedar bark work from 'Bones' Eddy Macdugall. Rounding out his learning, Sammy did a lot of cultural training under late Chief Kwaksistalis, Adam Dick and his late son, Michael; who also trained him to prepare logs for totem poles. He then worked with Chief George Shaughnessy on traditional singing and dancing related to the potlatch system. Sammy currently works with wood; making masks, wall hanging and panels. And more recently he also works with silver and copper creating one of a kind jewelry pieces. Artist's Bio: Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw artist Sammy Dawson was born in Vancouver, BC in the mid 1970’s. While growing mainly in Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island; Sammy carved his first piece, a thunderbird plaque, with his uncle David Robertson when he was just 12 years old. He watched his grandfather William ‘Billy-Bird’ Robertson, carve masks and bent boxes that he made for family potlatches. After watching his uncles David, Alfred and Sampson for some time, Sammy started carving masks on his own getting pointers along the way from ‘T-bone’ John Jacobson. He then apprenticed under Simon Dick, who helped hone his mask making. Sammy learned cedar bark work from ‘Bones’ Eddy Macdugall. Rounding out his learning, Sammy did a lot of cultural training under late Chief Kwaksistalis, Adam Dick and his late son, Michael; who also trained him to prepare logs for totem poles. He then worked with Chief George Shaughnessy on traditional singing and dancing related to the potlatch system. Sammy currently works with wood; making masks, wall hangings and panels. Artist Bio: Blake Lepine, (Shaá’koon) , was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is of Tlingit, Han, Cree and Scottish descent and grew up with the Tlingit culture. Blake is inspired by the old designs from carving books his mother had. Over the years, Blake has practiced and perfected his own stylized form and interpretation of this art while adhering to the traditional foundations. This gives a modern voice to an ancient art, but also carries it into modern mediums other than the traditional forms of carving and painting of his ancestors. Inspired by their work on the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic medals, this limited edition print supports the production of Olson's film Bona Fide. Corrine Hunt is a member of the Raven Gwa’wina clan from Ts’akis, a Komoyue village on Vancouver Island. Her rich family history includes internationally renowned First Nations artists George Hunt, Henry Hunt, Richard Hunt and Tony Hunt, all of whom have been influential on her art. Uncle Norman Brotchie was also a significant teacher and mentor, introducing Corrine to Kwakwaka’wakw traditions and the art of jewelry-making. Born in Alert Bay in 1959, Corrine’s paternal grandmother A’neesla’ga,’ a Tlingit noblewoman from Alaska, gave her the name ‘Killer Whale Scratching Her Back on the Beach’ in 1965. Artist Bio: Born in 1948, Ross Hunt Sr. is a member of the Fort Rupert Band of the Kwagulth people. He credits his elders and family for his artistic inspiration.
